Fresh eggs, vibrant greens, plump peaches — you’ll find all these and more at Alabama’s bustling farmers markets. With nearly 130 markets across 67 counties, it’s easy to get your hands on local produce and artisan goods no matter where you are in the state.
The Farmers Market Authority is a state agency that provides information, leadership and modern facilities necessary to move agricultural products from the farm to the consumer. Its website allows visitors to peruse farmers markets, farm stands and u-pick operations by county.
Folks in North Alabama can spend Saturdays between April and November at the Madison City Farmers Market, where producers sell natural and organic fruit, vegetables and dairy products, handmade crafts, soaps, candles and more.
In Birmingham, Pepper Place Market runs mid-April through mid-December. The popular Saturday morning event features live music and cooking demonstrations in addition to local produce, meats, dairy products and baked goods. Birmingham is also home to the state’s largest market, the Jefferson County Truck Growers Association’s Alabama Farmers Market, an open-air and indoor facility that’s open seven days a week year round.
An hour southwest of the Magic City, the Tuscaloosa County Truck Growers Association hosts its market on Tuesday and Saturday mornings along the Black Warrior River in Tuscaloosa. And the Homegrown Alabama Farmers Market, led by a group of students from the University of Alabama, hosts its own market each Thursday from May through October.
Mobile’s popular Market on the Square draws music lovers and square dance enthusiasts in addition to shoppers looking for local goods. And in Foley, visitors break away from the surf, sand and outlet shopping to peruse the Foley Convention and Visitors Bureau’s Chicago Street Farmers Market. Open Friday afternoons and evenings from late May through July, the market boasts plants, produce and fresh bay shrimp, in addition to live music and family activities.
